Laya Al-Khazam's Adventures in Sweden
After war erupted in her home country of Syria, nine-year-old Laya Al-Khazam and her family found refuge in Sweden, where their asylum claim was recently approved.
This is an excerpt from a children’s book that Laya and I are collaborating on that utilizes play, drawing and photography to explore the ongoing mental, emotional and physical journey that resettled refugee children experience.
The text of the book tells the story of Laya and her family in a storybook fashion and is aligned for readers ages 9 and up. Some of those excerpts are included in the following captions.
